OIFF offers classic film series

The Orcas Island Film Festival welcomes in the New Year with a five-film, Classic Film Series. A fascinating program created by local cinephile Michael Yeaman.

Come join us again this year for the 5th annual OIFF Classics Series as we explore the mystical, mysterious and often magical nature of memory on film. How well do you remember yesterday? Last week? last month, last year? Have you ever forgotten something important?…remembered something differently than others? For many years Hollywood has attempted to portray memory on film. The technique of flashbacks is almost as old as cinema itself, going back to at least 1904. But as we all know; our memory can often fool us.

There will be an introduction to each film followed by an open discussion of the film afterward. Bringing your own drinks and snacks are welcomed.

“It’s wonderful in the deep of winter to have these great films to look forward to watching them on the big screen,” says Michael Yeaman.

This Film Series is FREE for attendees and is generously underwritten by David Dotlich & Doug Elwood.

Dates as follows and all showtimes at 4 p.m. at the Orcas Center Main Auditorium.

Jan. 14 – “Memento” (2000) Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough film Memento expertly shows the power behind the lies we tell ourselves.

Jan. 20 – “Rashomon” (1950) Brimming with action while incisively examining the nature of truth, this is perhaps the finest film ever to investigate the philosophy of justice. (Dir. Akira Kurosawa)

Jan. 28 – “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in this wonderfully romantic and mind-bendingly creative film. (directed by Michel Gondry)

Feb. 4 – “Last Year At Marienbad” (1961) is a hypnotically beautiful puzzle box of a film and one of the most influential in history. (directed by Alain Robbe-Grillet)

Feb. 10 – “Spellbound” (1945) A Hitchcock amnesia classic starring Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman
