In what has become a holiday tradition for many Islanders, the Olga Symphony returns to the Orcas Center stage for two nights of post-Thanksgiving revelry, Friday Nov. 25 and Saturday Nov. 26.

With their sense of high fashion and low-brow humor, this ensemble has been delighting audiences on Orcas and neighboring communities for over 30 years.

“Eclectic is too narrow a term to describe the music they play, but boy was it fun” was the general consensus of the Deer Harbor Community Club potluck last month, organizers say. Another long-time islander was overheard warning a newcomer, “I know they call themselves a symphony, but they play the banjo and the musical saw!”

As usual, the group has lined up an assortment of musician friends to add to the mix: islanders Dimitri Stankevich and Martin Lund will be joined by Mel Urbanozo on ukelele and multi-instrumentalist Mark Minkler. Fiddling wizard JP Wittman returns as a full fledged member of the Symphony.

As always, proceeds from the concerts will benefit the Orcas Center and another Orcas non-profit. Tickets are still at the 1978 rate of five dollars, and are available at the Center box office or online.

The shows typically sell out early, so all are encouraged to make plans now, purchase tickets soon and prepare to dress for the occasion.
