    The red and white bobber bobbed on the surface of the small pond. Although it was still early in the day, summer insects buzzed and whirred in the warm, still air. My tee shirt clung damply to my back and my pony tail itched. But, my eyes were glued to the bobber until they were almost crossed.

    Lopez Island High School Athletic Director Larry Berg said recently, “This was quite a year – winning league championships in football, volleyball, boys basketball, girls golf, and boys track; going to the State playoffs in volleyball, boys basketball, girls track, boys track, and girls golf; winning the District  special sportsmanship award girls basketball; and being the State Academic Champions in girls golf with special academic awards for boys golf, boys track, and girls track.”

    The Orcas Island Recreation Program is looking for four teams for this summer’s softball league. Adult softball will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:50 to 7:30 p.m. at Buck Park startng July 1.

    This summer, Sail Orcas will offer adult sailing lessons. The 12-hour courses are offered during June and July. Volunteer instructors are all experienced, local sailors, providing personalized instruction to just two students per course.

    Orcas Recreation has partnered with many Orcas Island children’s organizations to create a Web site that is a virtual “one-stop shopping” of the community resources for youth on the island.
    “At Orcas Rec, we want the community to know that every group we can think of is listed on the youth resource page at www.orcasrec.org,” said Didier Ginçig, Coordinator of the Orcas Island Recreation Program.

    The defending girls’ golf NW 2B League champion Lady Lobos continued their league dominance this season with another League Championship win on May 13. Senior Lisa Vaughn was the medalist with a nine-hole score of 53 followed by senior Randi Ritchie in third place with 56.

    Taylor Diepenbrock tees off on the second day of the State Golf Championships. Diepenbrock finished tenth overall. The boys’ team won the second place trophy beating out 10 other schools.

    Orcas Island High School took a record eight players to the 1B/2B State Golf Championship in Bellingham last week. Five boys and one girl made the championship round of the two-day, 36-hole tournament. The Vikings’ boys team won the second place trophy, finishing 23 points ahead of their league rivals, LaConner, and a scant six points behind the State Champions, Northwest Christian of Spokane.

    The Orcas Island fast-pitch softball team traveled to Yakima for the State 2B softball tournament the weekend of May 23-24. “”We were excited to have reached the State Tournament, knowing we were one of only sixteen teams in the 2B division still playing,” said coach Scott Harris. The team won one game and dropped two in the double-elimination tournament.

    Under excellent racing conditions, the Lopez boy’s track team claimed the second place trophy over 26 teams at the State 1B Track and Field Championships at Eastern Washington State University in Cheney, Wash. May 23-24. The Lady Lobos squad finished in eighth place in a field of 29 teams.
