Orcas Island is about to have its first Intentional and Tasteful Wet T-shirt Contest. But don’t worry; we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief because this contest will not be exploiting women. In this contest women are in for a treat – all the contestants are men.
On this evening, there will be no judgments about physique; instead, women will be showing their appreciation for the men of our community who are helping raise funds for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer.
On Saturday, August 2 at 9 p.m. at The Lower Tavern, The Orcas Gals (Angela Canada, Susan Hull and Mia Kartiganer) will be hosting a wet t-shirt fundraiser for the upcoming 60-mile 3-day walk that takes place in Seattle in September. Jim Passer, owner of The Lower Tavern, is whole-heartedly supporting this fundraiser. (There is a rumor that he may even enter the contest.)
The cover charge for this event will be $5. Men of all shapes, sizes, color, age, and fitness level who are interested in participating should don a form-fitting white t-shirt and be prepared to ham it up for an adoring and grateful audience. Live the fantasy.
Already signed up for the event is local musician Madrone Kubovcik, who says that he is intent on winning the contest.
There will be awards for many categories so no one should be shy about entering. The emcee for this event is Jaen Black: musician, natural comedian, and author of the just released book, Bastante. There will also be musical surprises from beloved, local musicians.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure receives 85 percent of the net proceeds of the walk. The remaining 15 percent of the net funds will go to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
The Orcas Island community, men and women, are invited to join The Orcas Gals in support of the worldwide fight against breast cancer.
Rachel Newcombe is an Orcas Island resident and member of The Orcas Gals.
