Theatre at Orcas Center returns to Center Stage May 19 – 28 with a compelling new play, “Still Now,” written by Katie Bender and directed by Pepper Binkley.

Still Now follows Annie (played by Chelsea Sherman), who has a reckoning with her body after her cancer diagnosis. A dancer by trade, Annie begins to explore how her new body moves in the world and seeks to learn Butoh dance – A form of Japanese dance that arose in the wake of WWII. Butoh as a theatrical dance form explores the limits and nature of being human. Though the inspiration is often disaster or seemingly insurmountable pain, the dance itself is cathartic, improvisational and filled with humor and beauty.

The journey of the play is towards Annie’s liberation and catharsis, and weaves together dance with theater, exploring how we come to terms with our mortality. Joining Sherman on stage is Seattle-based Butoh dancer, Kaoru Okumura, who plays the Butoh Master Ishikawa, as well as local performers Jamey Moriarty, Tom Fiscus, Liz Doane, Margot Van Gelder, Tiffany Loney, Colleen Smith and Sofia Poe.
