Jumpstart your kids’ summer reading

by Vicki O’Keefe

Orcas Island School District Library

The Orcas Island School District is doing several things to encourage children to read this summer and you can be a part.

Author Roseanne Parry of Portland, Oregon will visit the school on June 5 and an autographed copy of her book will be given to each 3rd and 4th grade student. All 5th-grade students will have a gift card at Darvill’s bookstore to select the book they like to read this summer.

Every elementary student will be given several books from donations at our free book fair on June 17 and 18. We hope to have 800 books for our 150 students to browse. A large part of the books are from Friends of Orcas Island Library. Without the help of Lynn Carter and the library, this event would not be possible.

You can give a new book to the free book fair, or donate money to a gift card for a new book at Darvill’s Bookstore. You can also give a gently used children’s book to the school library for our free book fair.
