Disney’s “Alice In Wonderland” will be performed Wednesday June 11, at the Orcas Center.

The second decade of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival (OICMF) will begin June 18 with an always-early morning general public ticket “rush.”
Orcas Center offers Theatre Camp for children from five years old through teenage. Theatre Camp will meet daily from Monday, June 23 through Saturday, July 5. The 2008 Theatre Camp theme is “Cirque d’Orcas” and will feature teaching artists from the thrilling Dream Science Circus. Exciting circus skills will be taught, as well as perseverance, team work, and self-confidence. “Instructors have a wild imagination and a passion for movement, theater and self expression,” said Orcas Rec Director Didier Gincig. All participants will be eligible to join a procession in the Historical Day Parade as well as a Center Stage performance on July 5. Cirque d’Orcas is offered to teens and children through a partnership between Orcas Center and Orcas Island Recreation Program. Tuition is $150, and registration is through Orcas Center (376-ACT1) or Orcas Island Recreation Program (376-5339).
Sunday Night Live, open-Mic Music and Spoken Word at Enzo’s in Eastsound is now occurring on the second and fourth Sunday of each month.
A fun and informative workshop on the fundamentals and nuances of drawing portraits with Seattle artist and Gage Academy instructor Geoff Flack will be held on June 23-24 at the Senior Center. Participants will be drawing from live models and using soft pencils and charcoals.
Orcas artists Kari Van Gelder and holographer Jeffrey Murray will display paintings and holograms during the month of June in the lobby of Islanders Bank in Eastsound.
Recently, Orcas Island Elementary School’s fifth-grade class worked with the San Juan Nature Institute, represented by Fiona Norris, in collaboration with the Center for Historical Ecology of the Salish Sea (KWIAHT) in a study of the Cascade Creek Watershed as it enters Buck Bay.
The San Juan Nature Institute and Salmonberry School are teaming up to continue a research project on Indian Island this summer. This program is partially funded with a grant from the Orcas Island Community Foundation, and is being made available to all Orcas students in grades 3-7.
The program will include onsite investigations; field trips to do comparative study of different island tide pools; and classroom time to compile, graph and discuss the results of the investigative work.
All children are invited to bring their artwork to the Orcas Senior Center Tuesday, June 3 between the hours of 1:30 to 4 p.m. The show will be available to the public during Senior Center hours. The take-down date for the show is July 1.

People have told us, ‘It sounds great, but you’ll never get teens interested in participating – especially not in the summertime.’
