After a strong regular season that saw Orcas Island High School finish 17-1-2 — with its only loss coming in the district finals — the Vikings are positioned to make another run at a 2B state championship. A title this year would mark back-to-back crowns for the blue and white.
As the No. 1 seed, OIHS advanced by winning its quarterfinal match 5-0 against Upper Columbia Academy. The Vikings now face No. 4 seed Evergreen Lutheran in the semifinals on Nov. 21, with a trip to the championship match on Nov. 22 on the line.
Head coach Terry Turner reflected on the team’s path to the semifinals and said the seeding aligned with expectations.
“In my view, the district tournaments and state quarterfinals were well designed by the seeding committee, and with no real upsets, the strongest four teams will play in the state semifinals today [Friday, Nov. 21],” Turner said.
“On the other side of the bracket, Mount Vernon Christian and St. George’s Academy will be a great match. For Orcas Island, coming off the big win against Upper Columbia, the only match that matters right now is the semifinal. We’ll bring the highest-scoring, most creative attacking style of play in the state,” he said.
