The Rotary Club of San Juan Island presented Orcas Elementary third grade students with dictionaries on Nov. 1.

“Teachers Sharon Harvey and Martha Inch like how the children eagerly use the maps, sign language and marvel at the longest word in the dictionary,” said Rotary Literacy Chairman Barbara Fagan. “Rotary encourages our students to be curious about our language and have fun reading.”

Fagan said club members are proud of Lindsey Youngquist, a graduate of San Juan Island High School, who is presently studying in Nepal as a recipient of a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, where she is working on global health issues.

Rotary International is an organization of people united worldwide who provide humanitarian service and help “to build goodwill and peace in the world.” Rotary International has 34,164 clubs in 166 countries.

The San Juan Island Rotary Club meets on Wednesdays, 8 a.m. at Downrigger’s Restaurant. For more information, contact Jack Cory at 378-4900.
