The inaugural Border War Cup was at stake this last Saturday at Dahl Field as the newly organized Pemberton, British Columbia Grizzlies ventured south for their first football game ever against the Orcas Vikings. After a lopsided but very sportsmanlike 65-0 Viking victory, the two friendly teams gathered for group photos, dinner and war stories, leaving the battle on the field.

Scoring was quick with an interception for a touchdown from linebacker Jake Zier, then a touchdown reception by Demitri Pence from quarterback Daniel Briggs followed by a Zier touchdown run ended the first quarter 21-0. Second quarter scoring started with a Jack Russillo field goal, a fumble recovery for a touchdown by lineman Joey Susol and a Zier touchdown run ending the half 45-0.

In the second half, defensive back Rylan Date returned an interception for a touchdown after a Zier touchdown run, then Date ran for another after a reception from quarterback Pence, ending the game.

Vikings play Friday Harbor for the Island Cup at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 14 in Friday Harbor.
