After a long summer break, Orcas students returned to their classes and the discipline of the fall sports season abruptly replaced the leisure of summer.

Soccer practice started immediately for the two dozen seventh- and eighth-graders who gathered on the grass for a new season. Developing players are working on fundamentals while more skilled players are practicing shooting, overlapping attacks or new dribbling moves.

“As a co-ed middle school team, we develop players for both of our high school squads. Our game schedule is generous, avoiding the longer off-island excursions,” said coach Phil Carter. “We play small schools like Lopez or the schools in the Burlington district — Allen, Bayview, Edison and Lucille Umberger — as well as Mount Vernon Christian.”

Coach Kathy Morris said the middle school girls volleyball team is off to a great start. The girls’ first games will be during a tournament at Mount Vernon School on Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. All teams in the Vikings’ league will be represented. The team’s first home game will be against Concrete on Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. in the middle school gym.
