It’s not your usual fundraiser.
There won’t be an auction. Or solicitation of money. Just good company, good food, and good music.
The Orcas Island Rowing Association is holding its third annual dinner on Saturday, March 6 at Four Winds Camp. Because of its new format, it is being called a “fun-raiser.”
The evening starts at 6 p.m. Jessi Taylor, owner of Lulu’s Pasta Rustica in Eastsound, is providing entrees and appetizers for the event. Haggen grocery store has donated desserts, wine and beer.
Entertainment includes music provided by the Orcas jazz band the “Accidental Quartet,” which consists of Chris Waage on guitar, Craig Canine on trumpet, Randy Jezierski on drums, and Lizz Hanks on bass.
Al Ulbricksen, a long-time island resident who was a member of the 1952 coxed four that won a bronze medal in the 1952 Olympic games, will give a talk on rowing. Not only was Ulbricksen an Olympic medal winner, but his father, Al senior, was the most famous coach of the renowned Husky rowing team at University of Washington in Seattle. Two other members of the bronze medal crew are Seattle residents with strong Orcas ties: Carl Lovsted and Al Rossi. They may also be at the dinner.
The junior crew team will round out the evening by providing some comic relief with improvised performances.
Tickets are $35 and include appetizers, a four-course meal, and entertainment. There are a number of premium seats available. There is a junior ladies captains table, which is the best place to be if you want an evening with youthful energy. There is an “Olympiads” table where diners can hear what it’s like to compete at “the games.” Spend the evening with members of the 1952 Olympic crew and Orcas head coach Tina Brown, a member of the women’s eight crew that represented the U.S. at the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona. Or sit at the founders and coaches table, where stories of how it all began and what it was like in the “good old days” will be told.
Also on March 6: the Orcas Island Rowing Association “Alumni Regatta” at 10 a.m. at the Cascade Lake boathouse. The event is open to experienced rowers of all ages, but there is a special welcome to alumni of the junior rowing program.
