tLoss to Shoreline earlier in the week, 3-1
The Orcas boys soccer team beat La Conner 7-1 at Orcas on Friday afternoon and lost to Shoreline 3-1 earlier in the week.
On Friday, the Vikings scored with quick shots at the goal. “To their credit, La Conner is limited because they only have 11 players and no substitutes for when the guys get tired.” said Coach Matt Stolmeier. “But I didn’t want our team to drop their intensity because of this. We came out very strong and played very hard.
Within just a few minutes we had five shots on goal, and Barrett North had his fourth hat trick of the season, scoring three of our seven goals within a 22 minute time span.
Chris Ghazel also scored his fifth goal of the season and Martin Winkler, an exchange student from Slovakia, played an outstanding game. He’s European and because of that he has a very different outlook on the game. He has very quick feet, and got excited and over-kicked the ball but then he recovered and scored on a pass, punching it in at a low angle for a beautiful goal.
Samuel Parish also scored on a penalty kick with a powerful line drive shot right into the net; his accuracy is great and he has no hesitation at all. At the close of the game Parish took a cross shot and the goalie fumbled the ball; Alex Waldron was right there to capitalize on the lack of control and he chested the ball into the net for the last score of the game. We played more aggressively and that’s what I wanted. The guys are passing well and seeing the open space better.”
“Against Shoreline,” Coach Stolemeier said, “we just couldn’t get our shots off even though we had practiced that; Shoreline is the top team in our league and they read us well. They put together some really effective passing formations against us, and the score really doesn’t reflect the heat of the game. Chris Ghazel scored for us late in the second half.”
Orcas goes into playoffs on Thursday for district placement and they do not know their opponent yet. The Orcas boys soccer team plays against Mt. Vernon Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at home. Mt. Vernon is ranked second in their league.
