New web cam at Eastsound airport lets pilots peer at the weather from afar

The outside world now has another portal by which to gaze into the mists of Orcas Island.

The Eastsound airport has a new 24-hour web cam, purchased with monies supplied by the WSDOT Aviation Security Grant Program. The Port of Orcas will operate the web cam.

Mounted on the airport terminal building located on the east side of the airport, the camera provides four views: southeast towards Mt. Constitution (3.5 miles to the towers; top elevation 2,600 feet), south towards Mt. Baker Road, north towards Sucia Island (3 miles) and north-northwest towards the Canada coast range (60 miles; tops 4,000+ feet).

The images displayed on the WSDOT website indicate the direction “southeast, south, north and north-northwest” along with a time/date stamp. Images update every 15 minutes.

The images are provided as a service for pilots to view current airport conditions. Orcas Island’s other publicly-accessible web cams are located at the Orcas ferry landing, at the Eastsound Landmark Inn, and at Rosario Resort. Links to other web cams in San Juan County are available online here.

For more information, or to report a problem with the camera, contact Orcas Island Airport at (360)376-5285 or email orcasairport@rockisland.com.
