Orcas Kings football debuts at jamboree

The season opener for the Orcas Kings was the very first football “game” for at least half the team.

The Orcas Kings’ season, which started Aug. 22, opened with the jamboree in Burlington, Wash.

“The jamboree is made up of four 20-minute scrimmages against the league’s other teams,” Marty Zier, coordinator of the group, said. “For our first scrimmage, we played Anacortes, then Sedro-Wooley, then White, then Linden. All scrimmages were very competitive and close and we even managed a ‘win’ against Sedro Wooley.”

Demitri Pence, Gage Harlow, and Jay Zier all produced strong plays on the field.

“The kids played hard; they take it very seriously and we did great,” Marty said. “We had a couple of players who demonstrated that they had football in their blood.”

This is the fourth year of the Orcas league chapter and it is growing in popularity on Orcas Island. For more information call Marty at 317-5872.

“The thing in football that is so fun is that you can’t judge a player by their size,” Marty said. “These kids are wicked.”
