The passenger-only ferries, Skagit and Kalama, will soon depart for Tanzania. Only, this time they’ll be the passengers.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) sold the two ferries to Scope Community Consultants Ltd of Port Coquitlam, B.C., for $400,000.
They’ll be transported by cargo ship to Tanzania, where they’ll provide ferry service between the mainland and Zanzibar.
The ferries, built in 1989, have been docked and inactive since September 2009. The state Legislature directed WSDOT to end its passenger-only service in 2006.
