Care for Madrona Point | Letter

I read last week’s story about Madrona Point. Back in July, a friend and I went for a wildflower walk on Madrona Point. There was no closed sign. We went to collect trash as well, however, out on the point itself I found only one red string. What was a sorry sight was the parking area at the entrance – a human dump site of the worst order. Two large cans full and overflowing as well as take-out food garbage littered everywhere. In my mind a show of total neglect and disrespect.
I contacted the Orcas Chamber regarding this issue and asked for a sweep by San Juan Sanitation when it does town trash pick-ups. I further contacted the chamber to follow up. To what definite results I know not. If we as a community want shared usage of this wonderful natural resource, we have to take some responsibility to act in a respectful manner. How can we expect the issues the Lummi have with us to resolve and improve if we don’t and won’t clean up our own sites. I was ashamed when I saw this desecration of the point. We can do better. We must do better.
