Join Orcas Recycling Services and The Exchange for the final of three community “Talking Trash” conversations, “Way Beyond Worms: Solutions for Community-Scale Composting” on Oct. 15, 6 p.m. at the Deer Harbor Community Club.
As much as 20 percent of the garbage we transport to the mainland for disposal is compostable food waste that’s crazy. But solutions are not simple to come by. The first two seminars, first in Olga and then at the Grange, brought people up to speed on the realities and opportunities for composting on different scales—from backyard bins to possible commercial-scale operations.
What is emerging from these conversations is that the best plan for Orcas may be a combination of different scale operations—backyards, ‘neighborhood’ scale shared compost piles, and a future “community scale” or “small scale commercial,” perhaps at The Exchange.
