The overall winner and first individual male competitor of the Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon was Grayson Zulauf, pictured above. The annual triathlon is presented by Friends of Moran and held over Labor Day weekend. The individual first female finisher was Lucille Arragain, visiting from France.

The Lady Vikings soccer team lost their season opener against Concrete 2-1 on Sept. 10. On Sept. 12, coming off an exciting Island Cup victory, the Vikings football team hosted a non-league contest against Stellar Prep Academy from Oakland, Calif., losing 28-18.

Sandlot softball team is state champion

Sandlot has been playing tournaments every summer in Mt. Vernon and Ferndale for the past 10 years. This year’s team consists of Josh Claypool, Bobby Curtis, Joe Duenn, Cole Franklin, John Hamel, Reggie Harris, Mayson, Danny McAndrew, Jacob Myers, Tyler Nigretto, Tommy O’Rourke, James Segault and Josh Underdahl.

Funhouse Commons to hold 5K on July 4

On Saturday, July 4, before the parade, The Funhouse Commons will hold its fourth annual 5K, now named the “Eat and Run” in honor of the many local restaurants sponsoring the race. Divisions include a 5K run, 5K walk, and a 1K kids’ run. Walkers will start at 8:45 a.m., the kids’ race will start at 9 a.m., and runners will start at 9:15 a.m.

Saints win championship

The Orcas Christian School Saints Flag Football team ended its season on a winning note after beating Milo Adventist Academy from Oregon 38-30 and claiming a championship n Billings, Mont. over the weekend. The tournament boosted their overall win-loss record to 18-3.

The (0-12) Lady Vikings softball team had a rough schedule last week, facing double headers against the league’s top teams. On May 4 the Vikings dropped both games, 17-4 and 17-6, to Friday Harbor while LaConner went home with two wins on May 8, 9-1 and 7-3.

Orcas Viking update

On April 28, the Viking baseball team narrowly lost 4-3 to the Concrete Lions.Miles Harlow pitched well, and the Viking scored early, but "sloppy play and a couple mistakes" allowed the Lions to score in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win, according to coach Jim Passer. On May 1, the Vikings rebounded strong with an 8-0 win over the Darrington Loggers in a shutout performance by pitcher Pasha Bullock, giving up only three hits.
