Hughes wins Gold Glove

Garrett Hughes, grandson of Judy Hughes and cousin of San Juan County Councilman Rick Hughes, has received national honors for college baseball. Hughes won the American Baseball Coaches Association /Rawlings NCAA Division III Gold Glove for playing second base at Whitworth University in Oregon. Hughes had a fielding percentage of .995 for the 40 games played in 2016 season. He had only one error in 207 defensive chances. Additionally, Hughes made 120 assists, had 86 putouts and hit .295, with five home runs and 31 RBIs. Hughes is the second player for Whitworth to ever win the award.

Orcas twins go to state for golf

Maia and Zoe Lewis-Shunk qualified for the state golf championship at the tri-district tournament in Oak Harbor on May 19. Maia placed third and Zoe placed fifth. The eighth-grade twins beat out 14 other girls.

The Orcas Christian School Saints flag football team leaves for the Vancouver Flag Football Championships next week leading the Nor-Pac league with an 8-1 record. The Jr. High Team is undefeated.

Vikings golf starts strong

The Viking Golf team, lead by head coach Bobby Olmsted, opened the season at home on Tuesday, March 17 against two strong teams, LaConner and Mount Vernon Christian. Although the teams were fortunate enough to have a sunny day, the difficulty of the Orcas course did not elude the players.

Orcas sailing begins

Orcas rowing started their crack-of-dawn practices earlier in the year on Cascade Lake. Meeting before school and on Saturdays, this group of dedicated athletes has practice three to five days a week, including fitness, erging and on-the-water technique and racing.

Christian School Saints earn league honors

After a successful 2015-2016 campaign which saw the first league title in school history, Orcas Christian School Saints, Boys basketball players, have been named Northwest 1B All Conference Team. And Head Coach, Ryan Davis, was named Coach of the Year. The Lady Saints were awarded the league's sportsmanship award.

OCS Saints end season

The Lady Saints kicked off a new era in their 2015-2016 season with a revamped coaching staff led by Head Coach Roger Worley. Joining Worley on the bench was Michelle Bechtel, a college basketball standout while at Walla Walla University, and Troy O'Neal, a seasoned veteran and coach of the game who has worked with many local basketball programs.

Viking b-ball teams are bound for playoffs

The Orcas boys enter the final stage of the season 9-3 in league behind Friday Harbor 10-2 and LaConner 12-0 before competing in the play-offs. At 5-5 in league, the Lady Vikings trail Mt Vernon Christian at 7-5, Friday Harbor 11-1 and undefeated LaConner at 12-0.

Saints win two of three games

Orcas Christian School’s eight-game undefeated winning streak came to an end on Thursday at the hands of the defending 1B State Boys Basketball Champs, the Lummi Blackhawks, by a final overtime score of 75-71.
