The Orcas Island Rowing Association (OIRA) raced against six other schools on Saturday, April 12, at the Northwest Sculling Regatta held on Lake Stevens, near Everett, Wash. Both juniors (high school-aged rowers) and masters competed on 1500- and 1000-meter courses.
The Second Annual Orcas Island Rowing Club St. Patrick’s Day Regatta was held on March 16 on Cascade Lake. The event pitted the high school novice and varsity rowers against adult rowers in an informal format.
The Orcas Lady Vikings softball team stunned the Highland Christian Knights 18-6 at home on Monday, March 24. The game was stopped during the bottom of the sixth inning after only one out when the Vikings drove in seven runs to take a commanding lead.
The Lopez Island varsity girls’ basketball team was awarded the Mal Walton Varsity Team Sportsmanship Award on Friday, March 21 by the Northwest Board of the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Basketball officials and referees who officiate games in Whatcom, Skagit and Island and San Juan counties.
The Lopez High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams have shocked their opponents this season by shattering school and state 1B records in their first meets this spring. “Even up against 2B and 1A schools, both teams are ‘running’ over their opponents,” said Steve Wilbur, Lopez track coach.
