The Lady Lobos played against Grace Academy at Lopez on Tuesday and won three out of three games to take the match; the scores were 25/20, 25/10, 25/6 all in favor of the Lopez volleyball team.

Coach Mellonnie Altona decided to shift her starting line-up to a set of new starters to give the players experience at those positions and kept the new starters in for the entire first game. The Lobos shifted back to the seasoned starters in the second and third games. Coach Altona said, “Some of the younger members are really starting to shine. Helen O’Brien had an amazing day with her serves, and Lily Ewert had a kill at the net every time she stepped onto the court; Vilina Sanborn-Bill had two aces. Everyone is giving 100 percent. It’s great.”

On Friday the volleyball team traveled to Marysville and won that match in three out of three games; the scores were 25/23, 18/25, 25/16, all going to Lopez.

The Lobos prevailed, and their serving was stellar. During the third game Malisha Burson had 11 straight serves that were unreturnable. “Malisha is completely stepping up to the plate. I can put her anywhere on the court and she owns the position. She was 13/14 on her serves,” saidl Altona.

Stats for the game included outstanding serving by Tamara Vojnar, Hanifah McGovern, Sarah Stanley and Malisha Burson who all hit 100% of their serves throughout the game. Emily PostvanderBurg had five kills at the net, Burson had two and McGovern one.

The Lopez volleyball team goes to district starting Wednesday, Nov. 4 in Anacortes and again on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Coupville High School. The team plays against North Sound Christian who is first in their league on Tuesday, Oct. 28; if they beat NSC, the Lobos will be first in their league when they go to the district playoffs. The Lobos play as well this week at home against Skykomish on Oct. 29 and Highland Christian on Friday Oct. 31 in their last home games of the season.
