Lopez Lobos laid low in last game with Lummi

The point spread told the story: the Lobos came out on Monday, late afternoon, and though they had the home advantage, they couldn’t quite put it in the basket as fast as their opponents, and the Lobos fell to Lummi 62-44.

The Lummi Blackhawks had the height and experience on their side and some bullseye scorers, which did not help the Lopez team. But William Carson, Alex Buffum, and Kevin Dengler were all over the court. Dengler consistently plowed through the key and was able to sink many two pointers. Though the Blackhawks’ defense was relentless, Shaun Samuel did damage as well, but didn’t succeed with as many chip shots. But his aggression and power were apparent down in Blackhawk territory and the opposing team had to work for their points, thanks to the tireless focus of Leland Nopson and Keldon Jardine. Jardine came in as well for the Lobos and made a couple of stunning shots, as well as Buffum, who scored with several jaw-dropping three-pointers. Nate Drahn also came in and played for the Lobos and his presence was welcome as he leapt in the face of Blackhawks who were hungry for points.

At the start of the game, three of the graduating seniors were recognized for their outstanding athletic efforts on behalf of the Lopez High School; these were Michael Lease, Shaun Samuel, and Leland Nopson, who all played their last high school basketball game on Monday night for Lopez.

Monday afternoon ended the basketball season for the Lopez Lobos. Golf and track start in three weeks.
