tLopez’s whiz-bang fireworks show is not the only highlight of the Independence Day holidays on the island.

The weekend’s fun begins on Thursday, July 3, when the Overton Berry Trio plays at the Outdoor Pavilion of Lopez Center (inside in case of inclement weather). The music is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Tickets are adult $15, youth for free, available at Lopez Center (or buy them online at www. lopezcenter.com), Paper Scissors on the Rock, Blossoms Organic Grocery, Islehaven Books, and Islandale Southender.

On Friday, July 4, the fun begins bright and early for Fun Run/Walk. Walk 5 kilometers or run 5 or 10 kilometers in the 29th Annual Lions Club 4th of July fun run/walk event. Show up between 7:15 and 8:15 a.m. at Lopez Center. Entry fees before July 4 are $15 with a t-shirt, $7 without ($12 with a t-shirt and $2 without for ages 12 and under). Add $5 to race-day registration. The Lions Club will be at Lopez Village Market from noon to 4 p.m. on July 2 and July 3 for early registration.

Then for the booklovers, the time-honored Friends of the Lopez annual book sale continues from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lopez Center.

“Broad Stripes and Bright Stars” is the theme of the Lopez Island Lions Club-sponsored community parade again this year. It steps off at 11 a.m. and will follow the same route as in previous years, beginning at Woodmen Hall, proceeding along Fisherman Bay Road, through Lopez Village, and ending at Islanders Bank. All entries are welcome. There is no charge for registration, which begins at 9 a.m. at Woodmen Hall. Judging for numerous awards, including best bribe, takes place along the route. Prizes will be awarded after the parade during the Salmon Barbecue at the Lopez Community Center. This year’s Grand Marshal is Daren Holscher. He is co-owner of Lopez’s famous Bay Café and a tireless community supporter.

After the parade, enjoy the 4th of July Salmon BBQ. Generous portions of ocean -caught, alderwood smoked salmon with all the fixins’. This year, the band Woodrush will perform during the barbecue. Enjoy short lines with discounted advance purchased tickets. $15 for adults and $10 for children under the age of 12. The children can substitute hot dogs for the salmon if they wish. Tickets can be purchased at Village Apparel and at the Chamber of Commerce office.

Lopez Island’s famous fireworks display, one of the best on the West Coast, will begin around 10:30 p.m. over Fisherman Bay.

On Saturday, July 5, head over to the Farmers’ Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Sally’s Garden, Lopez Village.

The world music group Children of the Revolution will play on Saturday, July 5, at 4 p.m. at the Lopez Center Outdoor Pavilion. Tickets are adult $15, youth $10 and are available at the Lopez Center office (or buy online at www.lopezcenter.com), Paper Scissors on the Rock, Blossom Organic Grocery, Islehaven Books, and Islandale Southender.
