A San Juan Island man accused of neglecting his dog could face charges of animal cruelty. The man’s dog, which reportedly was in need of medical attention and living in unsanitary conditions, was seized by a deputy who went to the 48-year-old’s Halsey Road home to serve his papers involving a civil dispute; the man was not home at the time.

Jan. 29: About 50 large bags of garbage, consisting mostly of construction debris, were discarded on the grounds of an unoccupied home on Old Johnson Roadway in an apparent case of illegal dumping. Authorities are on the lookout for a woman, and for her 46-year-old boyfriend, a contractor who’s professional reputation is reportedly suspect, after finding a letter addressed to her among the debris, a fraction of which contains household waste. The San Juan Island couple are reportedly hiding out to avoid bill collectors and disgruntled customers.

About 400 feet of copper pipe disappeared off the deck of a San Juan Island home in an apparent case of theft. The pipes were reportedly twisted and bent and then torn free from the railing of a deck on Foxwood Lane.

Feb. 2: Erratic driving led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man for DUI following a late-afternoon traffic stop 1200 block of North Beach Road. The 55-year-old, who was pulled over at about 5 p.m., reportedly caught a deputy’s attention by zig-zagging several times from one lane to another.

Feb. 3: A defective light over a license plate led to a trio of tickets for a San Juan Island man following a late-night traffic stop near the intersection of Marguerite and Spring streets. The 33-year-old, who was pulled over at about 11 p.m., was ticketed for driving without a license or identification, without proof of insurance, and for the lack of a properly lit license plate.

Jan. 31. A San Juan Island girl accused of snatching a bottle of cough syrup and an item of food from a Friday Harbor grocery store was arrested for shoplifting shortly before noon.
