On Monday morning, December 1, the San Juan County Elections Office accepted an application for a manual recount in the San Juan County District 4 County Council race. The request was submitted by Mindy Kayl, who lost to Richard Fralick in that race. In the final count of the 1,921 ballots cast, Fralick received 947 votes, Kayl received 827 votes, and there were 12 write-in votes and 136 undervotes.
But it’s a risk that the San Juan County Council appears willing to take.
The number of people willing to stop in their tracks and pick up a penny may be getting fewer by the day.
With its evergreens, douglas firs, lush vegetation, and eagle, hawk, and owl sightings, the Odlin South property on the north end of Lopez has been untouched for the last 18 years. But the fate of the land is up in the air, as its owner, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), may soon be selling it.

The Orcas Garden Club will celebrate its 50th Anniversary, Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 10:30 a.m. with a gala program and tea in the Madrona Room at the Orcas Center. In addition to the regular program, the Club will take this opportunity to honor garden club members of long standing. All current members and their guests are urged to attend.
There have been significant changes in the tax form 990 this year. The IRS has adopted a wide rage of new regulations that will have an impact on most nonprofit organizations.
Many are feeling the strain of the economic downturn. Some are being laid off. Some are still working, but earning less. The Orcas community has many opportunities to give to those feeling the pinch, as well as an extensive network of services and aid for everyone from newborns to seniors. The following is part one of a two part list.
The Annual Tree Lighting ceremony and Shop the Rock The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce, brings seasonal music by the Orcas Island Community Band, cider and cookies provided by chamber member businesses and a visit by Santa with toys for the kids to the Eastsound Village Green. Festivities start at 4:45 p.m. and culminate with tree lighting at approximately 5:15 p.m. Many Eastsound business will remain open until 7 p.m. on this evening.
On Tuesday, Nov. 24, contractor Steve Orcutt was at a client’s home performing clean up at the work site, and he and a co-worker were getting ready to toss a few odds and ends into the back of their vehicle when, on a whim, one of the men unscrewed the caps on the end of a PVC pipe.
At 4:30 pm, as dusk enveloped the island, Lopez families and friends gathered around enclosed bonfires, sipping coffee and beverages as they waited for the official village lighting to take place. Finally the signal was given by the fire engine and lights in a colorful burst everywhere illuminated trees and buildings and beat back the winter night.
