Crow Valley Pottery announces “Taking Root in the Garden,” the first of its 2010 summer series and its thirteenth garden show.

“The Garden Art Show has long been the un-official ‘welcome back summer!’ party for Orcas Island,” says Michael Rivkin, who owns Crow Valley Pottery with Jeffri Coleman.

There will be an opening reception on Friday, June 25, 4 to 7 p.m. at The Cabin with music by Carolyn Cruso and nibbles.

This year’s event is anchored by longtime Crow Valley favorite, seasonal Orcas resident and ceramic artist Maria Root, who has created a collection of whimsical and colorful garden sculptures just for this event, including “BirdSpas,” “GardenTotems,” bird houses, garden pools and finials.

Another Orcas artisan, Nicole de Marvel, is presenting original quilts centered around the garden and the flowers within. She adds hand-painting to the fabric and stitching, resulting in a three-dimensional quality not generally found in most fabric arts. Nicole, co-owner of Orcas Island’s Old Trout Inn with husband Henri, is a fourth-generation Parisian chef. After over 30 years as a restaurateur, and equipped with a degree from the prestigious Beaux Arts in Paris, Nicole attended a quilting class. She found that when she combined her new love of quilt-making with painting and her passion for her gardens, new creations arose almost like magic.

Crow Valley welcomes back another long-time garden show studio, Rosebar, makers of handmade metal trellises, towers and other bits for the garden as well as an entirely new line of glass garden votives by Allison Brubaker.

The show also includes paintings, handmade birdhouses, tiles, and all manner of stone and cement.
