OHS Golf Team Wins State Title

Special to the Sounder

What a week it has been for the Orcas Island golf team!

Coaches Ryan Kennedy and Chris Sutton led our team to great victories this season. After playing in the Tri-District tournament, three boys and three girls advanced to the state tournament: Sam Sutton (12th grade), Joshua Spinner (9th grade), Joseph Anderson (8th grade), Lili Malo (11th grade), Vera Sasan (10th grade) and Chloe Anderson-Cleveland (10th grade).

The two-day state tournament was held in Tumwater on May 21 and 22 with only half of the players advancing to day two. All three boys advanced and Malo represented the girls on day two. The Orcas boys were one of only two teams to have three players advance to the second day and took the first-place spot by a very large margin! Not only did the team win, but they had some great player placements. Anderson was the district, tri-district and state champion. Spinner took the 6th place spot at state, Sutton placed 25th and Malo was the 10th place finisher for the girls.

These are first-time, history-making wins for the OHS golf team! The team would like to thank their coaches, the Orcas Island Golf Club, the Orcas Island Booster Club, the fans and their families for their continued support. Go Vikings!
