This week’s Sheriff’s Log included several incidents regarding mental health issues. They were not included below due to their sensitive nature. The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.
April 14
• A Lopez deputy responded to a report that a Lopezian received a call from an unknown source asking for their Medicare information.
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver citation for operating a vehicle without insurance.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a driver for using a cell phone and driving left of center. The driver was issued a citation for using a personal electronic device while driving.
• A San Juan deputy retrieved a dog from Anacortes police belonging to a hospitalized Friday Harbor resident and transferred it to the care of the Animal Protection Society until it could be retrieved by the owner.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of suspicious behavior in relation to a missing dog. The dog was unable to be located but its collar was found. A squatter on the property denied knowing the whereabouts of the dog.
• A Lopez deputy stopped a driver speeding on Fisherman Bay Road near the village and issued them a citation for driving 15 mph over the posted speed limit.
• A Lopez deputy issued a speeding driver a citation for traveling 19 miles per hour over the posted speed limit on Fisherman Bay Road.
• A Lopez deputy received old shotgun ammunition from a Lopez citizen to dispose of it safely.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of an animal staying in a vehicle while the owners were staying in a hotel. When confronted by hotel staff, the owner became aggressive and left the hotel. The deputy located the couple and issued them a trespass letter for the hotel.
• An Orcas deputy stopped a driver on Olga Road near Moran State Park and issued a citation for speeding 47 mph in a 25 mph-zone.
April 15
• A deputy took a call about a theft call near Eastsound.
• A person on San Juan who failed to show for a jail commitment was located and was taken into custody.
• San Juan deputies responded to a request to trespass unwanted subjects; the involved parties were issued trespass warning letters and explained the trespass laws.
• San Juan deputies responded to a citizen dispute.
April 16
• A deputy on San Juan documented a report of fraudulent activity with no monetary loss.
• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to a report of firearms noise, found the area clear and advised the reporting party about county firearms rules.
• A Lopez deputy was sent to check on a roving horse. The horse was gone from the described location, but had left evidence at the scene. The horse’s owner was contacted and a broken fence was repaired.
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a CPR in progress. The subject was transported to the hospital.
• A deputy on San Juan was contacted by a person wanting photographs of their face taken. Photographs were taken and entered into the case file along with a large amount of provided documents regarding a civil issue.
• A Lopez deputy was sent to check on a possible vehicle prowl and learned the owner located their missing item.
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a call from the Superior Court and escorted an unruly citizen from the building.
• A Lopez deputy performed a welfare check and found the person was fine.
• Lopez deputies ticketed two drivers for not wearing their seat belt, and one was given a verbal warning for failing to sign his vehicle registration document.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a complaint about a missing cat. Though there didn’t appear to be any criminal intent on the part of the person in possession of the cat, the complainant was advised to ask that the cat be returned.
• Twice, Lopez deputies issued speeding drivers on Fisherman Road citations for driving 17 mph over the limit.
April 17
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for failing to stop at a stop sign, and multiple warnings for not having insurance.
• A deputy on San Juan issued a driver citations for not having insurance and for an expired registration over two months.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor stopped a driver for speeding and issued them a citation for exceeding the posted speed limit.
• A deputy on San Juan contacted a driver who was reported to possibly be driving under the influence. After an investigation, the driver was arrested for a DUI, taken to the sheriff’s office and processed.
April 18
• A Lopez deputy checked the village for a suspicious male who was looking into closed businesses. Once the man was contacted, the deputy determined nothing criminal had occurred.
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for traveling 54 mph in a 25 mph-zone on Roche Harbor Road.
• A Lopez deputy responded to an animal-at-large call. There was a loose goat on the road that had already safely returned to its owners’ property when the deputy showed up. The owner, however, was given a warning.
• A deputy issued drivers on Lopez citations for speeding, one for traveling 20 mph over the posted speed limit; another for 14 mph over.
• A deputy on Orcas took a report of threats made. The person receiving the threats did not wish to pursue charges but wanted the incident documented.
• A deputy on San Juan conducted a death investigation.
• In Friday Harbor, a deputy was contacted about trespassing. The deputy contacted the property owner who requested a trespass warning letter be issued; the deputy served the letter.
April 20
A driver on Lopez received a citation for traveling 15 mph over the posted speed limit on Fisherman Bay Road.
