A-Ok student art program receives grant

Do you have children or grandchildren at the public school? Do you recognize the value of art in the lives of children? Do you find inspiration in art? Did you know that a large part of the art instruction and activities in which elementary and middle school students participate is brought to them by a local nonprofit group of art enthusiasts? That nonprofit group is A-OK (ART FOR ORCAS KIDS).

A-OK, as part of the OIEF (Orcas Island Education Foundation) family, is responsible for coordinating and funding this vital and outstanding art program. This year Art for Orcas Kids has received a coveted and highly competitive grant from the Washington State Arts Commission (ARTSWA). This funding is designed to encourage stronger collaboration between A-OK, OIEF, and the Orcas Island School District to bring much needed art instruction to our elementary and middle schools. Together with funds donated from the local community, OIEF, and the Orcas Island Community Foundation, this grant has enabled A-OK to offer sixteen weekly session to each elementary class and 3 8-week sessions of “Art Exploratory” at the middle school.

The Orcas community is invited to share in creating art as well as viewing the creative results of this year’s classes. Watch for upcoming announcements about Clay Café (April 24) and the Student Art Show (opening at Orcas Center May 5).
