The Actors Theater of Orcas Island is offering six performances of John Patrick’s award-winning play “The Curious Savage” at the Grange.
This charming and funny play tells the story of Ethel Savage (played by Lesley Liddle) who has been committed to a “sanitorium” by her children (played by Ron Herman, Maura O’Neill and John Mazzarella) hoping to “bring her to her senses” so they can get their hands on the $10 million her husband left her.
Aided by the other residents of “The Cloisters” (played by Katie Zwilling, Lin McNulty, Luann Pamatian, Tom Gossett and Zach Knight), Mrs. Savage manages to foil her children and, as she gets to know her new friends, realizes that she will find happiness with them and prepares to spend the rest of her life there. The cast is rounded out by Tony Lee and Maria Massey as the staff of the sanitarium. The “Curious Savage” is directed by Doug Bechtel.
“As we follow the delightful and truly unique characters, we learn to see them as they see themselves, not as the world sees them,” Bechtel said. “As this play comes to its surprising conclusion, we learn that sometimes the ‘guests’ of The Cloisters living in their self-created “egg shell world” are more sane than those on the outside. The audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.”
“The Curious Savage” opens on Thursday, Feb. 17 with a fundraiser for the Orcas Island Grange. Tickets are $15 while tickets for the remaining performances are $10. Other performances are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19 and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 through 27.
