The Actors Theater of Orcas Island will be presenting “Waiting for MacArthur,” a full-length play by Paullette MacDougal.
Set in the months before and after the American entry into World War Two, the play tells the story of young and naïve nurse Annie Lou Holsom, played by Sandy Thompson, as she joins the Army.
As the war rages in the Pacific, Holsom is stationed on the island of Corregidor, General MacArthur’s fortress in the Philippines, where she matures, and experiences fleeting moments of joy as well as the indescribable despair at the human cost of war.
The story is told through letters between Holsom and her friends and family, as each of the women experience the war in their own way.
Louise Carnachan plays her mother, Aaimee Johnson plays her best friend and Patty Monaco plays her favorite teacher. Doug Bechtel directs.
On closing night, Sunday, June 28, the playwright will attend the performance and meet cast and audience.
The play opens on Friday, June 19 at the Grange with additional performances on Saturday, June 20, Friday, June 26, Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28.
All performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, available at Darvill’s Bookstore and the door, are $10. The intense emotional nature of the play makes it unsuitable for younger children.
