Long time coming: Food Bank building is finally on the island

It is finally here.

The Orcas Food Bank’s new building arrived by ferry this week after delays by the Washington State Ferry system. The building came in two sections on April 27 and 28.

“It went as smooth as can be,” said food bank president Larry Shaw.

The building was completed by manufacturer M/Space Modular Buildings in mid-March. Shaw said the board arranged to carry $1 million worth of insurance to cover the transport of each section, and was waiting for the MV Chelan to return to the San Juans route. But when the Chelan arrived, WSF asked for double the insurance: $2 million for each trip.

Shaw contacted senator Kevin Ranker for assistance, and said as a result of Ranker’s intervention, WSF agreed to accept $1 million in coverage for each trip.

Shaw says the buidling will be ready for use in about four weeks after the front porch and landscaping is completed.

“Everybody is elated (that’s it’s here),” he said. “We’ve been working on this for 18 months, and we’ve finally realized our efforts.”
