As August winds down, I want to take a moment to remind you that it’s National Make-A-Will Month — a perfect time to think about the plans we make for the people and pets we love most.

None of us likes to imagine the unexpected, but having a plan in place is one of the kindest things we can do. It brings us peace of mind and ensures safety and care for our pets in the event that life suddenly changes.

Here are a few simple steps you can take today:

• Keep a folder with your pet’s veterinary records.

• Write down any medications, special needs or routines.

• Let your trusted contacts know they’re part of your plan.

• Share your plan with Orcas APS — so if your pet ever comes into our care, we’ll know exactly who to call. (And if you’d like us to be part of that plan, we’d love to know that, too.)

We’re here to help however we can — just give us a call at 360-376-6777.

Hoku’s story: Love, loss and a new chapter

This month, our shelter family has been touched by the story of Hoku, a 16-year-old pit bull who was rarely seen without her best friend and owner. The two of them were known all over town, spending hours at the dog park every single day. Their bond was something truly special.

When her beloved person passed away last month, Hoku came to live with us at Orcas APS. She’s adjusted beautifully and now spends her days in the upper dog yard, happily greeting familiar faces from the community. She even does a little “happy dance” whenever she’s offered her favorite treats. Hoku has found her way into all of our hearts, and she will stay with us — surrounded by love — until it’s her time to be reunited with her person. Hoku’s journey is a gentle reminder of why making a plan matters so much. By taking a few thoughtful steps, we can ensure our pets are cared for with the same love and devotion they’ve always known.

Leaving a legacy of care

Make-A-Will Month is also a wonderful opportunity to think about how we’d like our love to carry forward. By including Orcas APS in your estate plans, you can create a legacy that ensures compassionate care for island animals — and support for the people who love them — for years to come. Together, we can make sure every pet has a safe tomorrow.
