Orcas Christian Class takes flight in hands-on aeronautics lesson

Recently, Ms. Angie Millen’s class at Orcas Christian School embarked on an extraordinary learning adventure as part of their aeronautics unit. The students were given a unique opportunity to take a flight around the islands, transforming their classroom lessons into a real-world experience.

“Each student was able to take the controls, fly the plane, and listen to other island traffic on their headsets,” explained Millen. This hands-on experience gave the students firsthand knowledge of aviation, communication and navigation far beyond what textbooks alone can offer.

One particularly memorable moment came during a near-zero-gravity maneuver. “One of my students was so inspired by the sensation that he now wants to be a stunt pilot and work in Hollywood!” Millen said.

This amazing experience didn’t just teach the students about flying — it also inspired them to dream bigger and try new things. Moments like these show how hands-on learning can spark curiosity and encourage students to follow their goals. It’s a great reminder that learning can go far beyond the classroom.
