Interview with Tycho Pendraig of Doe Bay Resort and Retreat.
What is your background and what drew you to this job?
My background is primarily engineering; I’m an undergraduate specializing in mechatronics, and I’ve spent a good seven years working senior roles in IT. Most recently I was working as an executive assistant in a small accounting firm, and doing tech work independently, and presently I serve as Front Desk Manager for Doe Bay Resort. I was inspired to apply by the breathtaking location and the creative, open, community-orientated culture that Orcas Island offers. It’s a perfect combination of my passions and professional expertise.
What do you love most about your job?
Working at Doe Bay aligns perfectly with my skill-set and sensibilities, allowing me to operate alongside a team that embodies excellence in service, in a place that values the individual. I love the variety – no two days are ever the same! – and I appreciate the balance between administrative work and guest interaction. And of course, Doe Bay is a gorgeous place to be any time of year!
What is something about yourself that would surprise people?
This has been a difficult one to answer! I think everyone who knows me knows how keen I am on tea, in fact my tea collection fills a bookcase (as do my books)! And many also know that I love to sew my own clothing, and tinker with various bits of tech, and pursue multifarious hobbies besides. I suppose people might be surprised to know that I actually do sit down and do nothing – on occasion! It’s a work in progress.
