Lopez Track team places third overall at Friday Harbor meet

On Friday April 3, the Lopez Track team placed third out of seven schools who took part in an all-district track meet at Friday Harbor. Lopez, which lost in overall points to two much bigger schools, Concrete and Mt. Vernon Christian, still made a very respectable showing.

“Our attendance was down markedly because of a trip to Japan that some students were participating in, as well as seniors visiting potential colleges and the upcoming spring break travel plans. Nevertheless,” Coach Michael Strom said, “we made a fair showing for the eight boys and the one girl who could attend.”

Jamie Cummins, who has done well throughout the track season, entered four events and placed in all of them. Cummins took third place in the 100 meter hurdle, second in the 300 meter hurdle, first in the 1600 meter (mile), and third in the long jump.

“She has a great attitude and is already doing exceptionally well, even as a freshman,” Strom. “She scored 16 points all on her own and displayed a versatility that is not often seen in these events.”

Highlights of the shotput, discus and javelin throws included Shawn Samuel who placed first in the shotput and Tommy Kramer, who placed second in the shotput. Kramer also placed third in discus, throwing just short of a 100-foot mark. Samuel placed fifth as well in javelin. The individual who won that event threw a 148 feet and 3” length while Samuel threw for 120 feet. In the 100 meters, Kramer came in third place.

“During the 4X100 meter relay,” Strom said. “Teams have to have really good handoffs and really good sprinters in these relays. Normally we have two relay teams for the 4X400 meter and for the 4X100 meter relays, but we were limited at this meet. Our team members Tommy Kramer, Alex Zoerb, Tucker Hoffman, and Emmett Lawrence came in third overall for the 4X100 meter relay. Emmett Lawrence came in second in the 400 meter dash. Hoffman placed second in the 200 meter. Our Lopez boys’ team placed third overall and I was pleased by that.”

Lawrence and Tucker, as well, both entered the 3200 meter run. Lawrence edged out Tucker for second place while Tucker took third place and Otto Schmidt from Friday Harbor, favored in that race, came in first.

Spring break is in effect April 6 through April 11. The next meet for the Lopez track team will be on Thursday, April 16 at Concrete.
