The Lopez Lobos soccer team won both its games last week, against La Conner 7-3 on Tuesday and Arlington on Thursday with a score of 8-1.

Coach Richard Têtu was especially proud of his younger players.”We had a couple of our key members out with injuries this last week and I saw the younger players – Jamie Cummins, Moira Crawford, Matt Haber, for example – all take on more aggressive roles on the field. It’s a wonderful thing to see players step up to the plate during a game.”

The Lobos scored early on in the first half, making it 2-1 in their favor at the start of the second half. La Conner came back strong, tying the game at 3-3. Then the Lobos rapidly figured out their defensive passing strategy and scored four more goals in the latter part of the second half.

Cummins made her first goal of the season, as did Brooke Schober. Sam Ferguson scored two goals. Charlie O’Neil also had two goals and two assists at goal. Tahoma Wrubleski had one goal and two assists at goal.

On Thursday, Oct. 9, the Lobos played Arlington and beat them on Lopez turf 8-1. Coach Tetu reported, “We had 38 shots on goal all told, and the opposing team had one. At this point, I am strongly optimistic that this team will be playing at district level.”

William Carson scored one goal for the Lobos, and Nate Drahn scored two that day while O’Neil had two goals and Wrubleski had a hat trick and scored three goals, one of which was a well-placed corner kick. The Lobos, however, did not fare as well against the Orcas Vikings on Saturday; they fell to the Vikings 7-1.

The Lobos play again on Tuesday Oct. 14 at Providence Christian and at home against North Sound Christian on Friday Oct. 17.
