Lady Vikings sail through the Hurricanes

The Lady Vikings came out hungry and hunting for points on Thursday afternoon, and they shut down the Mt. Vernon Christian Hurricanes handily 44-26.

The Lady Hurricanes brought in a lot of spirit for the game in the form of top scorers Melanie Kuipers and Kylie Whitener (eight and seven points respectively) but the Vikings were relentless and within 20 seconds of the start, Stephanie Shaw had put three points on the board for the Vikings, followed by a lay up from Lanie Padbury. It set the tone for the afternoon’s game.

“We’re 2-0 in our league and that’s a good start, but we didn’t play our best,” Coach Terry Moran-Hodge commented. “We can do better.”

The Vikings are in a good position, however. The only undefeated team in their conference (4-0), their two biggest opponents are Darrington (5-1) and La Conner (4-1) in their league.

The Lady Vikings beat Concrete handily at home on Tuesday, 53-26, and continued their winning trend against Mt. Vernon at a packed Orcas high school gym on Thursday, Dec. 17. Taylor Lee of Concrete was the high scorer that night for her team, with 13 points, but Padbury shot 17 that night and Shaw, with 15 points, easily overpowered Concrete. Scoring as well for the Vikings were April Hofmann with eight points, Ashley Janssen with six, and Emily Diepenbrock with a three pointer.

Against the Hurricanes, though, the Vikings were able to take advantage of what at times looked to be a lack of confidence on the Hurricanes’ part. But Moran-Hodge was worried about overconfidence. The Vikings did not play their best Thursday night.

Again, Shaw and Padbury led the Vikings in scoring against Mt. Vernon. Shaw put 11 points up and Padbury shot nine. Diepenbrock had six points, while Hofmann, Janssen, Allie O’Toole and Kenna Thomas all had four. Halley McCormick got one in as well.

The Lady Vikings played Mossy Rock on Dec. 19 and Lummi on Dec. 22. The season continues after the Christmas break on Jan. 2, when the team will play Port Townsend in an away game.
