The Viking Boys Soccer team lost to LaConner 3-2, Oct. 2 in a grueling rematch and their fourth game in seven days. Coach Matt Stolemier knew it would be a tough game after beating the Braves earlier in the season. The Vikings started strong with dominate possessions and ended the half 1-0 with a quick rebound shot from William Coe.
The second half, according to Stolmeier, “was very physical, it almost seemed like we were in a rugby match.”
Using brute tactics, the Braves scored three goals in about 20 minutes to take the lead. A late run by the Vikings came close with Chase Drake smashing in the second Viking goal after a great touch of control. Despite the loss, Stolmeier said he knew that the Vikings were a better squad and were capable of winning. Homecoming Oct.6 resulted in a savory 3-0 victory against the Shoreline Christian Crusaders, who the Vikings had previously lost to. Coach Stolmeier said “This was by far our best game of the season yet, all players came out fired up and ready to play.”
It was obvious as the Vikings dominated the field of play through creative passing and maintaining possession. Coach was also pleased with increased discipline on defense and repelling the attacks on goal by sharp tackling from Aidan McCormick and Caleb Dean. Rhys Thompson had an exceptional game with two first half goals scored with sheer determination and speed by maneuvering past the Shoreline midfield and defense. Starting the second half 2-0, the Vikings played just as focused and controlled the ball through the midfield.
Chase Drake used his fancy foot skills to get around the Crusader backline and put a perfect ball across to Wylie Kau for a wonderful half volleyed goal. Stolmeier credited Alex Rogers with his aggressive goalkeeping, keeping his team fired up and earned his second shut out of the season. Stolmeier said “I couldn’t be more pleased with the way we played like a team and played for each other, and if we can continue to put together games like this we will be a force to be reckoned with.” Vikings played Grace Academy Oct. 9 and Cedar Park Christian at home Oct. 12.
