Help make history for Orcas track and field | A senior project

by Forest Frausto

OIHS Senior

In 2020, the school track was installed, and in 2022, I helped start Orcas Island’s first track and field team. Helping start this team, seeing it flourish and watching my classmates run track has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve been a part of.

That is why, for my senior project, I will be raising money for the track team. We have the basics to get by, though additional equipment is required before we can host a home meet. For example, we only have enough hurdles for one lane, so we can not run a race. I run the hurdles, and this would be really special for me because, for the first year, we had no hurdle coach and not one real hurdle.

This year there are more than 50 Viking athletes working hard all season, but the community never gets to see what they are doing. With this equipment the middle school will be able to host meets in the future also. If you would like to donate to buy equipment for the team you will receive your name/business on the equipment.

Donate at https://www.orcasboosters.org/donate with the Booster Club. Make sure to specify Forest Senior Project and if you are fully funding a specific item or general donation for the Track Program. Questions? Email ffrausto@orcas.k12.wa.us.

You will receive your name on equipment if you donate to fully fund an item.

• Hurdles – $260 each (includes storage racks and shipping). We need 60 hurdles to support a meet.

• Starting blocks – $150 each. We need six starting blocks to fill all lanes.

• Timing system – $10,000 to purchase, or $1,500 to rent per meet. Accurate timing is necessary for fair competition. We can either invest in our own system or rent one for each meet.

• General donations. Support our needs for throwing equipment, sand for jumping pits and more.
