Cascade Lake Day For Children

Drop off your children at Cascade Lake any time after 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22 and the Orcas Island Recreation Program staff will take good care of them. There will be a certified lifeguard and adult supervision. Bring enough food, sun protection, a good book, cards, fun stuff to do, a towel, swimsuit. Ages seven and up. The cost is $25. Pick up at 4 p.m. or call 376-5339 to carpool. Registration forms are available online at www.orcasrec.org or at the public library.

Kids Whale Watch Trip

Children ages seven and up are invited to join Deer Harbor Charters for a whale watching trip on Friday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. They’ll look for orca whales as well as bald eagles, seals, porpoises, and numerous species of birds. This is an educational guided trip with an experienced captain and naturalist. Bring water, lunch, warm jacket, comfortable clothing and binoculars if you wish. Life jackets are supplied. Orcas Rec. Program will provide adult supervision. Pre-registration is necessary. You may call near the date of the event to see if there is room on the boat. Be at the Deer Harbor Marina by 9:45 a.m. The cost is $25.

Pop-Up Cards and Art Class

Children ages 8-12 are invited to learn how to make a piece of paper come alive and explore the elements of making pop-up art with Chama Anderson, Wednesday, July 23 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the public school cafeteria. Ooey Gooey Science Fun

On Wednesday, July 23, Children ages 7-12 are invited to make colorful and amazing volcanoes, create your own Oobleck (What’s that? Find out. Here’s a hint: It’s green and goopy.); make a peanut butter and birdseed bird feeder, and more. Get yucky and have fun! Taught by Carol Rost, science teacher, and a mom who likes to have fun, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Public School Cafeteria. Space is limited to 20 kids. The cost is $20. Boys Basketball Camp

Get ready for the upcoming basketball season at the Orcas Island Recreation Program’s Boys Basketball Camp, July 23-25 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the high school gym. Have fun and learn from local coaches, focusing on shooting, defense, rebounding, ball handling, and, the popular, scrimmaging. Although the camp is for grades 5-9, players will scrimmage within their same age group. This camp is for players who would like to play on middle school, junior varsity, and varsity teams as well as boys who do not plan to play on a team and would like to learn skills and have fun.
