UN declares March 26 International Lions Day

Because of the outstanding community service and vision services performed in 203 countries, the United Nations has chosen to recognize Lions clubs the world over with their own day on March 26.

On a more domestic level, the San Juan County Council has officially recognized the day. A proclamation issued by the council notes the various aid and service related achievements of the clubs on each major San Juan Island. Because of these contributions to the community, “Lions Day” has been officially declared.

Proud of being part of a global organization (with 1.3 million members worldwide, the Lions is the largest service club in the world), and able to assist in large service projects, such as Northwest sight foundation, but at the same time the Orcas Island Lions club is firm in its commitment to Orcas. They are local and “all about Orcas.”

The Orcas Lions club will celebrate 38 years of service to the community this May. Started in 1972, the club has 63 members. With their purple vests festooned with pins and badges, the Lions are regulars of the Orcas landscape, be it raising money for their projects and scholarships with the famous Fourth of July Salmon BBQ and tent rentals, or serving the community in a multitude of ways. The money raised by the club is returned to the Orcas community through scholarships, education support, youth recreation, camp Orkila, camp Horizon, vision and hearing assistance, and grants. Orcas Lions also sponsor toys for tots, blood drives, reading programs, the health screening van, and the Easter egg hunt.

“The Lions motto is ‘We serve,’” said Orcas Lions Club president Mike Jonas. “We are proud to be recognized by the UN and San Juan County. We are always eager to welcome people who feel likewise about helping their community.”
