Trashed tent, lost loot, switched seats | San Juan County Sheriffs Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.

Oct. 5

• A deputy responded to a VIN Inspection call on San Juan and a request to have two abandoned vehicles on her property designated as junk vehicles so they could be removed from her property. The vehicles were deemed to meet the requirements as junk vehicles and a junk vehicle affidavit was prepared.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for traveling 90 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone. Citations were issued for speeding and 2nd-degree negligent driving.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle and issued them a citation for failing to drive right of a roundabout, approximately 20 minutes after stopping the same vehicle for another citation.

• A deputy responded to a call about a trespasser at a local Eastsound business. A report was authored and forwarded to the prosecuting attorney’s office for review.

Oct. 6

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for traveling 65 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone. The driver was issued a citation for speed.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of vandalism. Unknown suspect(s) entered and destroyed one of the glamping tents on the grounds causing approximately $1,300 worth of damage. There are no suspect leads.

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of a juvenile problem that involved a reported incident of ongoing bullying at one of the schools.

Oct. 7

• A deputy responded to a report of a blue bag containing some personal items found in the parking lot at Jackson’s Beach property in Friday Harbor. The owner was unable to be identified and the bag was entered into the property room per policy.

• On Orcas, a deputy served a subject with a no-trespass warning letter barring him from a local business.

• A Lopez deputy responded to an order violation call and probable cause for driving with a suspended license was written.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a call that a resident found a knife on the side of the roadway. The deputy confiscated the knife for destruction.

• Lopez deputies responded to a fistfight at a local establishment where one individual attacked another following an insensitive joke. The deputy drafted a probable cause for assault.

Oct. 8

• On San Juan, a deputy received a report that a person had turned in several ID cards, credit cards, and business cards found in a parking lot. The items entered into the evidence.

• A Lopez deputy issued a parking citation for a boom lift that was left for multiple days and nights at Odlin County Park’s day-use parking lot.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a local business about a trespasser. A report was forwarded to the prosecuting attorney’s office for review.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an order violation. The suspect had violated the distance requirements outlined on the order as well as entered a building from which they were barred and was arrested for the order violation and trespassing in the first degree.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of suspicious activity. An unknown male walked into a store and made an employee very uncomfortable with the questions he was asking and the statements he made. The victim provided a description of the individual.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident. On arrival, the deputies found the incident to be a dispute between neighbors. An investigation revealed that no crime had occurred.

Oct. 9

• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic incident on San Juan. The deputy learned the incident was verbal in nature and the people involved were going to separate locations.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a reported theft. The caller had observed someone with a political sign in their hands and provided a vehicle license number and a description of the person to the deputy. The investigation continues.

• Deputies on Orcas responded to a citizen dispute. There was insufficient evidence to believe a crime had been committed.

• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic incident in Friday Harbor. When the deputy arrived at the location, only one person was at the scene while the other had left in a vehicle to an unknown location. The person left said the argument had been verbal in nature and there was no sign of a crime.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor was dispatched to a report that a credit card had been found. The card was entered into evidence per protocol.

• Emergency Medical Services responded to a call from the jail because an in-custody individual requested EMS services. The individual became verbally uncooperative with EMS and deputies, and EMS determined the person was still clear to be in jail.

• Along with Orcas Fire and EMS, deputies on Orcas responded to a single-vehicle collision. The driver was issued a citation for not having proof of liability insurance.

• San Juan deputies responded to a traffic offense in which occupants of a dark SUV were said to have fired gunshots or set off fireworks. No vehicle matching the description was located and no signs of fireworks or gunfire were found in the area.

Oct. 10

• A San Juan deputy was asked to conduct a welfare check. There did not appear to be any crime committed and the report was sent to Adult Protective Services for follow-up.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a burglary complaint. However, after an investigation, the deputy determined the complaint was unfounded.

• Before San Juan deputies attempted to take an inmate to the hospital for evaluation, there appeared to be a medical event and San Juan EMS was paged to respond. The inmate was ultimately transported to the hospital.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a complaint of animal cruelty and determined the complaint was unfounded.

Oct. 11

• A deputy on Orcas was dispatched to a possible assault call that had happened the day prior in Eastsound. After an investigation was completed, it was found no crime had been committed.

• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to a fraud call after $ 25,000.00 was discovered missing. The investigation is ongoing.

• A deputy was dispatched to an alarm in Friday Harbor. A panic alarm at a business had been activated, and deputies stood by until the person left the business. The person was found to be in violation of probation conditions.

• Lopez deputies responded to a death investigation.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a trespassing call. An investigation indicated no signs of a crime.

• A deputy took a report of a found wallet in Friday Harbor. The owner was contacted, and the wallet was returned to the owner.

• Deputies responded to a report of disorderly conduct in Friday Harbor. One person was found walking in the middle of the street, so extremely intoxicated that he fell down and was deemed to be a danger to himself and others. He was taken into protective custody and to the hospital.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of money found on the floor by the register at a business in Friday Harbor on Oct. 6, 2022. The money was entered into evidence; the owner is unknown at this time.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle because the driver had a suspended license. The driver and passenger switched seats when the deputy was turning around and the original driver was arrested and booked. The passenger was issued a criminal citation for making a false statement.

• Deputies on San Juan responded to a report of a domestic incident in a vehicle that moved from one location to another. The parties were separated upon arrival, and it was determined the incident was verbal only.
