On Monday, Dec. 15, at the Episcopal Church, 5th and 6th grade girls in Girl Scout Troop #172 filled 84 stockings with goodies for the children of families who receive food bank donations. This is the fourth year they have been doing this project and the number of stocking requests have increased every year. The girls love participating in this community service project and they do everything from decorating the stockings, to filling them with items, and taking the finished stockings to the food bank. This project will help the troop earn a community service award they are working towards this year.
The cold wind blows and the snow lingers, but there is plenty of warmth in the community. As the economy keeps tanking and the islands remain in winter hibernation, it is important to be aware of help that is available. Let this also serve as a reminder that this is a season of giving and sharing. The islands are rich with opportunities to donate time, talent, and money.
Rock and roll concert, There will be a showcase of rock n’ roll bands at Odd Fellows Hall, starting at 8 p.m. There is a $5 entry fee.
The Christmas Bird Count for the San Juan Islands has been postponed to Saturday, Jan. 3. Please contact Barb Jensen with questions: skylark@rockisland.com. It is not too late to participate, as some areas are not covered. Feeder counters are especially needed.
The County Public Works Department and Town of Friday Harbor are sponsoring a free Christmas Tree collection program this year. Trees will be chipped for mulch and not sent to a landfill. Help reduce the volume of holiday trash by bringing your clean, undecorated natural trees (no flocked or artificial trees) to your island’s solid waste facility between December 26 and January 11 during regular open hours.

The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division (WSF) reminds travelers to allow extra time for ferry travel throughout the holiday season. Some routes will operate on special holiday schedules on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. All routes are expected to see heavy traffic over the holidays.
On Tuesday, Dec. 16, the San Juan County Council formally awarded contracts to complete work on the courtroom and offices in the historic portion of County Courthouse to Peter C. Schmidt Construction of Friday Harbor.
After six years of failing to properly close four sewage sludge lagoons, San Juan County has completed cleanup and will pay a $10,000 fine to the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology).
