Mackaye Harbor Road washed out

Submitted by San Juan County

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office reported that at 11:55 a..m. MacKaye Harbor Road was washed out in the 1600 block of MacKaye Harbor Road / Outer Bay area. Mckay Harbor Road was reportedly impossible to access and the southern end of Lopez Island was cut off due to road blockage. Public Works is assessing the situation and is aware of areas where the roadway pavement has been compromised by coastal erosion, however, a complete damage assessment is not possible until conditions improve. Hazard warning signage is out.

Sheriff Peter encouraged citizens to please be safe trying to navigate the area and take turns yielding to oncoming traffic. Lopez Island residents and drivers are encouraged to exercise extreme caution and stay home as winter storm conditions create hazardous road conditions on MacKaye Harbor Road.

As conditions allow, Public Works crews will remove debris from the roadway and repair any damage. Lane restrictions and other hazard warnings may be necessary as the situation develops.

The County’s Sheriff’s Office and Public Works Department are monitoring the situation and will respond to changing conditions.
