The Orcas Island Historical Society will be holding a live and silent auction along with a History Matinee

Live and silent auction

The Orcas Island Historical Society will be holding a live and silent auction on Sept. 5 on the Eastsound Village Green from 10-3. Auction items will include a wide range of furniture, antiques, collectables and donations from local businesses. Do you have any genuine antiques or auction-worthy items that you would like to donate to the Orcas Island Historical Museum’s annual auction? Scour your attics, garages and storage units for those unique treasures you no longer need. All items donated to the museum auction are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

History matinee

There will be a History Matinee on Aug. 16 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Eastsound Fire Hall. The topic is “Rogues of the Salish Sea – Smugglers vs. the Law, 1880-1932.”

Continuing their series of events related to the history of smuggling on Orcas and the San Juans, this presentation describes both the lawbreakers and those who would enforce the law during the liveliest period of “evil doing” in our history.

Smuggler Kelly, Vic McConnell and others vs. Culver, Lonsdale and the United States Revenue Service in a saltwater game of cat and mouse will be discussed.
