Ben Silver invites islanders for vocal improvisation

All levels of singing experience are welcome to join vocal teacher Ben Silver at a vocal improvisation event on Friday Oct. 16 from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows hall in Eastsound

“With Ben Silver’s expert and delightful guidance, we will create new and spontaneous songs unique to the moment,” organizer Michael Hurwicz said.

Silver has been teaching various forms of vocal improvisation and group singing for over two decades. In 2005, Silver took a five-day master class in circlesinging with Bobby McFerrin. His other teachers of circlesinging, vocal percussion and vocal improvisation include David Worm and Rhiannon. Silver has been a member of performance groups Vox Pop and The Tritones. His songs have been published in “Carry It On,” “Sing Out Magazine,” The Washington Post, and the book

“Hearing Everyone’s Voice.”

Circlesinging, as practiced by McFerrin and Voicestra, is a vocal improvisation technique when a circle of singers takes melodic and rhythmic cues from a skilled leader and creates songs together unique to the moment. As the leader cues out old parts and introduces new ones, the song continues and changes without stopping, supporting individual solos and grounded in attentive listening.

A $15-25 donation is requested, but no one will be turned away. For more information, e-mail ben@bensilvermusic.com or call Michael and Sharon at 376-5773.
