Archetypes and the Cinema

Returning for their sixth annual summer film series on “Archetypes & the Cinema” are Frances Tobriner, Ph.D., Psychologist/Jungian Analyst, and Pat Littlewood, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, who are both practicing professionals with a mutual interest in the medium of film as an important visual and psychological means of expression.

The topic for this year’s three-part series focuses on Carl Jung’s notion of “collective consciousness,” which has to do with the condition of the individual within the whole of society and how a person may come to identify oneself as part of a larger group. Three films have been chosen to illustrate different aspects of Jung’s concept of the importance of differentiation from the collective and how a large community exerts pressures that can be detrimental to individuality.

The format of each class will include the screening of a selected film, followed by class discussion on the cultural archetypes common to the group symbolically portrayed in each film. Classes are scheduled to meet at the Senior Center on Thursday, July 30 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

The fee is $25 for the series, or $10 per single admission. Contact the Senior Center at 376-2677 for further information or to pre-register.
