The circus is coming to town

The New Old Time Chautauqua is taking to the high seas this year. The musical vaudeville circus presents its 28th annual summer tour, “Aqua Chautauqua”. The maritime tour will perform on Orcas Island during its list of stops.

On Tuesday, July 28 at 11:30 a.m., a marching band will lead an “Everybody’s Welcome Parade” in downtown Eastsound. Don colorful costumes and join the jugglers, clowns, and little fairies promenading and dancing down the street.

The parade will lead the merrymakers to The Funhouse where the free “Educational Circus” begins at noon. Children and adults can learn a wide variety of skills, including juggling, acrobatics, aerial, quilting, mask-making, drumming and clowning. There will also be a workshop about solar water heating and discussions about peak oil and “The Other” (how we treat people who are different than we are). Make sure to bring musical instruments for an old-fashion song swap.

At 2 p.m. at the Black Box of the Orcas Center, Islando from Dream Science Circus will teach “Beginning Arial Silks.”

At 7 p.m., “The Aqua Chautauqua Show” starts at the Odd Fellows Hall. Tickets are $12 general and $7 for those under 13, over 65 or with disabilities.

The Fighting Instruments of Karma Marching Chamber Band/Orchestra will march down the aisle to kick off the show followed by a variety of acts from across the far and near.

The New Old Time Chautauqua is a non-profit organization, whose mission is to nurture and build community through laughter, entertainment and education. The traveling troupe partners with local organizations and service groups. This show will benefit The Funhouse.
