Donte Felder to read at Artsmith salon

The next monthly literary salon presented by Artsmith will feature screenwriter Donte Felder from Seattle.

The salon on Nov. 1 is at 7 p.m. at FIRE! Smokehouse and Grill in Eastsound.

Felder won a humanitarian award from the Washington Education Association for his original play “The First Day,” a story about tolerance and forgiveness. Felder’s play “Katrina: I Too Am Worthy” was produced by the Langston Hughes Theater and addresses the events in New Orleans following the hurricane.

Felder currently teaches drama and social studies at Orca K-8, an alternative school.

Currently an MFA candidate at Goddard College, Felder said he has always had a passion for working with students and theater, and he aspires to create a school that specializes in the arts to give students an opportunity to learn, create, and produce their own work.

On the first Monday of every month, the Artsmith Salon Series hosts a featured writer from off island. There is also a writers’ open mic session. Anyone is welcome to share their original creative writing.

Felder will meet with Orcas writers and members of the community to informally discuss screenwriting, drama in education for social change, and the impact of Hurricane Katrina before his reading at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the New Leaf lounge at the Outlook Inn.

The salon is free to attend and is a collaboration of Artsmith and FIRE! Smokehouse and Grill. Located in Eastsound, Artsmith is a nonprofit supporting writers and visual artists.
